The first computer programmer — a century before computers existed. Working on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine, she wrote the first algorithm intended for machine execution. More remarkably, she foresaw that machines could compose music, generate graphics, and go far beyond pure calculation. She saw the future and wrote its first instructions.

1906 – 1992  ·  Rear Admiral, USN

Invented the first compiler and paved the road to COBOL — the idea that programming languages should be readable by humans. Found the first literal computer "bug" (an actual moth in the Harvard Mark II relay, taped into the logbook). Served in the Navy until age 79. Retired as the oldest active-duty officer.

Hollywood's most beautiful face hid one of its sharpest minds. Co-invented frequency-hopping spread spectrum during WWII to prevent torpedo jamming. That exact technology now underpins WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. The world saw glamour; she saw radio frequencies.

Katherine Johnson

1918 – 2020  ·  NASA Mathematician

Her orbital mechanics calculations were so precise that John Glenn refused to fly until she personally verified the computer's numbers. A Black woman in 1960s Virginia, she calculated trajectories for Mercury, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle. She didn't just count stars — she mapped the paths between them.

Marie Curie

1867 – 1934  ·  Two Nobel Prizes

First woman to win a Nobel Prize. First person to win two — Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911). Discovered polonium and radium. Coined the term "radioactivity." Her research notes are still so radioactive they're kept in lead-lined boxes. She literally glowed with discovery.

Rosalind Franklin

1920 – 1958  ·  Gone at 37

Her Photo 51 — a single X-ray diffraction image — was the Rosetta Stone of DNA's double helix structure. Watson and Crick used her data without proper credit to build their model and win the Nobel. She never received one. Cancer took her at 37, likely from the very radiation she worked with. The helix of life was her photograph.

Margaret Hamilton

1936 – present  ·  Pioneer

Led the software team for Apollo 11's onboard flight computer. When alarms fired during lunar descent, her priority-based architecture shed non-essential tasks and kept the landing on track. She coined the term "software engineering" to give the discipline the respect it deserved. She wrote the code that landed humanity on the Moon.

Dorothy Vaughan

1910 – 2008  ·  NASA's First Black Supervisor

When IBM machines threatened to replace human computers, she didn't wait to be made obsolete — she taught herself and her entire team FORTRAN, making them indispensable. NASA's first Black supervisor, she led with quiet brilliance and fierce determination. She didn't break the glass ceiling; she reprogrammed it.

1882 – 1935  ·  The Mother of Modern Algebra

Noether's theorem — the bridge between symmetry and conservation laws — is foundational to all of modern physics. She revolutionized abstract algebra and ring theory. Universities refused to pay her because she was a woman, so she taught for free. Einstein himself called her "the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced."

Chien-Shiung Wu

1912 – 1997  ·  The First Lady of Physics

Experimentally disproved the conservation of parity — one of the most shocking results in physics history. Her male colleagues Lee and Yang received the Nobel for the theory; she was excluded despite conducting the experiment that proved it. Also worked on the Manhattan Project, improving uranium enrichment. The boss, always.

"It is shameful that there are so few women in science... In China there are many, many women in physics. There is a misconception in America that women scientists are all dowdy spinsters."

Maryam Mirzakhani

1977 – 2017  ·  Gone at 40

First woman — and first Iranian — to win the Fields Medal (2014), mathematics' highest honor. Her work on Riemann surfaces and moduli spaces was described as "dazzling." She worked by drawing on enormous sheets of paper spread across the floor; her daughter called it "painting." She painted infinity, and infinity was beautiful.

1956 – present  ·  First Black Woman in Space

Physician. Engineer. Peace Corps doctor in West Africa. Then she flew aboard STS-47 in 1992 — the first Black woman to travel to space. After NASA, she founded a technology company and a science literacy program. Also appeared on Star Trek: TNG because Nichelle Nichols inspired her as a child. Full circle. Full trajectory.

Hypatia of Alexandria

c. 350 – 415 AD  ·  Murdered for Her Intellect

The last great scholar of ancient Alexandria. Taught Neoplatonism, edited Ptolemy's Almagest, built astrolabes and hydrometers. In a world that was turning from reason to dogma, she held the light of knowledge. A Christian mob murdered her for her influence. Sixteen centuries later, her name still burns bright. Long live.

Lise Meitner

1878 – 1968  ·  The Mother of Nuclear Fission

Provided the first theoretical explanation of nuclear fission. Her partner Otto Hahn received the Nobel; she was overlooked — partly because she'd fled Nazi Germany as a Jewish woman. Einstein called her "the German Marie Curie." Element 109 — Meitnerium (Mt) — sits on the periodic table forever. Beautiful, brilliant, and immortal in the elements themselves.

Barbara McClintock

1902 – 1992  ·  Solo Nobel at 81

Discovered genetic transposition — "jumping genes" — in maize in the 1940s. The scientific establishment dismissed her for decades. Called her work crazy. Ignored her. She kept working. In 1983, at age 81, she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine — alone. Nobody can turn you off when you know you're right.

"If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off… no matter what they say."

Taken Too Soon

Some of the brightest lights burn the shortest. Cancer, violence, and a world not yet ready for them stole these women before they could see the full measure of what they'd given us.

The Nobels They Never Received

History's most consequential oversights

Rosalind Franklin
Photo 51 was the key evidence for the double helix. Watson & Crick received the 1962 Nobel in Medicine. Franklin died in 1958 — the Nobel is not awarded posthumously.
Chien-Shiung Wu
Designed and executed the experiment proving parity violation. Lee & Yang received the 1957 Nobel in Physics. Wu was excluded — she merely did the experiment.
Lise Meitner
First to explain nuclear fission theoretically. Her lab partner Otto Hahn received the 1944 Nobel in Chemistry. She had fled Nazi Germany — out of sight, out of the committee's mind.
Emmy Noether
Noether's theorem is foundational to all of modern physics. No Nobel, no major prize in her lifetime. She wasn't even paid by the university where she taught for years.
